However, testosterone is also important for women, even though they produce 20 to 30 times less testosterone than men. Testosterone has a mood lifting effect, ensures for more assertiveness and enhances the desire for sex in both women and men.

Testosterone is a sex hormone that is mainly associated with men – after all, it is responsible for the characteristics that distinguish the appearance of men from women, such as beard growth: it ensures the development of the male sex organ and is responsible for sexual potency and fertility. In addition, it strengthens the heart, brain and bones, supports muscle growth and fat decomposition, counteracts diabetes and high blood pressure, and helps to lower cholesterol levels.

However, testosterone is also important for women, even though they produce 20 to 30 times less testosterone than men. It also enhances sexual sensitivity, making it easier for women to reach orgasm.

Any Questions?

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding this test. Your question is missing? Please contact us at:

Does "the more the better" apply to testosterone?

No. Every hormone has a certain scope in which the values must lie so that our body remains healthy. Both too little and too much have harmful effects. The first signs of a testosterone excess include increased aggressiveness, acne and oily skin. In the long run, there are serious consequences such as heart failure, strokes or infertility.

My results are very different from the last blood values I did at the doctors. Why is that?

The values of blood and saliva tests cannot be compared. Significant differences between blood and saliva tests are: (1) Blood tests are not able to distinguish the protein-bound (inactive) from the freely available and active hormones and thus give an approximate value. Why is that important? Because the blood values can be within the normal range, but if you look at the active hormones, deficiencies or excesses can also be found. (2) Blood tests show the hormone levels outside the cells in the serum and do not reflect the other levels in the body where they are actually active. (3) If you use transdermal hormones as part of hormone replacement therapy (i.e. absorbed through the skin), blood values are not accurate for the check. This is because hormones once absorbed into the blood through the skin bind to the red blood cell membranes to minimize adverse interactions with the aqueous plasma, since most hormones "love fat" and thus prefer to bind to fats. As soon as your blood sample is taken, it is usually centrifuged and the red blood cells together with the hormones are removed before analysis. This phenomenon has been described by Stanczyk et al. (2005) (see references) for transdermal progesterone. But it also seems to occur to a small extent for all other hormones. For a comparison of values it is therefore essential that both tests were carried out using the same method, ideally even in the same laboratory.
