Who should take the test?

A healthy liver is vital for the human body. As the largest organ in our body, our liver has 3 vital functions. It filters and detoxifies our blood, helps our digestion by producing bile and stores important vitamins and carbohydrates. Liver problems can be caused by a variety of factors that damage the liver, such as viruses, alcohol use, medications, and obesity.

With our Liver Function Test your liver status will be determined based on the following markers:

  • Alanine-aminotransferase (ALT)
  • Aspartate-aminotransferase (AST)
  • Total Bilirubin (TBILI)
How does it work?

You collect a dried blood spot sample from the comfort of your home, send it to our lab and will receive the lab results, including detailed information about your liver health markers.

What guidance will I get along with my results?

After the analysis was conducted, you will receive a lab report with explanations about the analyzed markers as well as information about possible symptoms that can occur when there is an imbalance. Further to that, we always recommend the discussion of the mailed results with your doctor or practitioner.

Although we do not offer medical advice ourselves, we will gladly assist you in finding a suitable therapist in your area. Besides, further information is available on our website, especially in the different test categories, under “health conditions” and the FAQs. Still have questions? Then you can contact us by writing an email to contact@verisana.com.

How is my privacy protected?

Samples for our tests are collected in the privacy of your own home. We and our partner laboratories (who may be contracted by us to conduct some or all analyses of your test) take customer privacy very seriously. Only you will have access to this information and we will not share your information with any not authorized third party. All samples are disposed of following analysis.

Test measures
For the Liver Function Test we analyze:
  • Alanine-aminotransferase (ALT)
  • Aspartate-aminotransferase (AST)
  • Total Bilirubin (TBILI)
ALT

Alanine-aminotransferase (ALT) is an enzyme produced by the liver and has the primary function to help with chemical reactions in the body. Naturally, ALT in higher amounts can only be found in the liver, not in the blood. Therefore, low levels of ALT in the blood results are typical for a healthy adult. When the liver is damaged through accidents or diseases, ALT is released into the bloodstream causing ALT levels to rise. Elevated levels typically indicate a problem with liver cell integrity.

AST

Like ALT, aspartate-aminotransferase (AST) is an enzyme found in the liver and other organs, but usually not so much in the blood stream. Therefore, when organs are damaged, they release an excess of AST into the blood, which we can measure with our test. AST and ALT serve similar functions in our bodies, and as such include both markers in our tests to get a more concise picture of your organ health.

TBILI

Bilirubin is a yellow pigment that is produced during the normal process of red blood cells dying. When a red blood cell has reached the end of its life, it is broken down into different components. Bilirubin is one of these components. On its way to the liver, the bilirubin circulates through the blood, before the liver excretes the bilirubin through bile. Our lab test measures the Total Bilirubin (TBILI) in the blood, including direct and indirect bilirubin.

Any Questions?

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding this test. Your question is missing? Please contact us at:

What can cause increased ALT levels?

Increased ALT levels may be caused by a lot of things, such as: Damage to red blood cells, heat stroke, too much vitamin A, muscle injury, alcohol abuse and drugs such as statins, aspirin, antibiotics, chemotherapy, barbiturates, and narcotics.

I am not getting enough blood from my finger, what can I do?

Prepare the blood draw well: Hold your hand a little longer under warm water and circle your arm to stimulate blood circulation. Prick the finger on the side, not directly on top of the fingertip. The middle or ring finger of the non-dominant hand is usually best. When piercing, place your finger on a firm surface to avoid unconscious pulling back. A light squeeze and massage towards the fingertip helps stimulate blood flow. Alternatively, blood can be taken from the earlobe or from the vein (at the doctor's).

I am pregnant. Can this affect the outcome?

Yes, pregnancy, as well as vigorous exercise can cause an increase in AST levels. In this case, we recommend talking the results over with your doctor to determine whether for example a re-test is necessary.
