Who should take the test?

Your kidneys are a vital part of your health. They remove wastes from the body, clean your bodily fluids. Every minute, about one liter enters the kidneys and is cleaned there, before flowing back into the body. Your kidney function test results reflect how well your kidneys are working. Abnormal kidney function can cause accumulation of waste products in the body, which can lead to fatigue, headaches, nausea, and more.

With our Kidney Function Test your kidney status will be determined based on the following markers:

  • Blood urea nitrogen (BUN)
  • Creatinine (CREAT)
How does it work?

You collect a dried blood spot sample from the comfort of your home, send it to our lab and will receive the lab results, including detailed information about your kidney health markers.

What guidance will I get along with my results?

After the analysis was conducted, you will receive a lab report with explanations about the analyzed markers as well as information about possible symptoms that can occur when there is an imbalance. Further to that, we always recommend the discussion of the mailed results with your doctor or practitioner.

Although we do not offer medical advice ourselves, we will gladly assist you in finding a suitable therapist in your area. Besides, further information is available on our website, especially in the different test categories, under “health conditions” and the FAQs. Still have questions? Then you can contact us by writing an email to contact@verisana.com.

How is my privacy protected?

Samples for our tests are collected in the privacy of your own home. We and our partner laboratories (who may be contracted by us to conduct some or all analyses of your test) take customer privacy very seriously. Only you will have access to this information and we will not share your information with any not authorized third party. All samples are disposed of following analysis.

Test measures
For the Kidney Function Test we analyze:
  • Blood urea nitrogen (BUN)
  • Creatinine (CREAT)
BUN

Blood urea nitrogen (BUN) is a waste product formed during the process in which our bodies break down proteins. It travels into the kidneys and healthy kidneys then filter the urea through urine. Increased BUN levels may indicate that the kidneys are unable to effectively remove urea. As such, measuring the BUN level helps to evaluate the kidney function.

CREAT

Creatinine (CREAT) is another waste product. It is formed by the breakdown of creatine, a key molecule in muscular metabolism. Healthy kidneys are removing creatinine and expel it in urine. A kidney or urinary tract disorder reduces the excretion of creatinine and thus raises the creatinine levels. Therefore, creatinine levels are a good indicator to evaluate kidney function.

What are the symptoms of kidney dysfunction?

Symptoms of kidney dysfunction include: Fatigue, lack of concentration, insomnia, swelling around the eyes, face, wrists, abdomen, or ankles, decrease or discoloration of urine mid-back pain, high blood pressure, nausea / vomiting and loss of appetite.

What can affect the kidney function?

Things that can affect kidney function are: A bacterial infection, reduced blood flow to the kidneys due to dehydration/ congestive heart failure/ diabetes, kidney stones or a high protein diet.

I am pregnant and my BUN levels are increased.

During pregnancy, BUN levels usually fluctuate, so increased levels during pregnancy are not a cause for concern. Creatinine blood levels on the other hand are generally slightly lower during pregnancy, which is also no cause for concern.
