Who should take the test?

We’re all well-acquainted with the sensation of enduring continual stress and experiencing persistent tension. Regrettably, our bodies are unable to distinguish whether we are genuinely facing a life-threatening situation or simply navigating our daily lives. In both scenarios, our bodies generate a substantial quantity of stress hormones, with cortisol and adrenaline being the most prominent.

Cortisol ranks as one of the primary stress hormones, alongside adrenaline, and it is primarily produced in the adrenal cortex. Typically, cortisol levels peak between six and eight in the morning, coinciding with the body’s awakening. Throughout the day, cortisol levels gradually decline, allowing the body to gradually unwind in the evening. During the period between midnight and four in the morning, cortisol levels usually reach their nadir. Elevated cortisol levels at this time can potentially lead to sleep disturbances.

The test analyzes the morning values of the following hormone:

  • Diurnal/Daily Cortisol

Our Daily Cortisol Test helps you identify abnormalities in your stress hormones as accurately as possible by measuring the cortisol concentration throughout the day. With these valuable insights, you can take targeted steps to alleviate stress, enhance your sleep quality, and foster a healthier lifestyle.

Cortisol

Cortisol, a hormone produced in the adrenal glands, stands as a key player in the body’s stress response, alongside adrenaline. Stress hormones like cortisol enable the body to react effectively to specific strains by mobilizing energy reserves, preparing for a “fight or flight” response. Cortisol production is heightened during strenuous physical activity, competitive sports, psychological and emotional stressors, and severe illnesses.

Beyond its role in stress response, cortisol plays a crucial part in various metabolic processes within the body. It contributes to immune functions with its anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic properties, aiding in overall health maintenance.

However, it’s important to note that both excessively high and excessively low cortisol levels can lead to undesirable symptoms.

Chronic stress, widely recognized as detrimental to health, serves as a significant trigger for elevated cortisol production. Excessive cortisol levels can result in symptoms such as weakened immunity, depression, physical fatigue, metabolic disturbances, diabetes, obesity, and sleep disorders.

Conversely, overly low cortisol levels can also disrupt well-being. Cortisol is indispensable not only for mobilizing energy reserves but also for supporting cardiovascular health, gastrointestinal function, the immune system, and various cognitive functions in the brain.

This salivary diurnal cortisol test was convenient, easy to use, and informative. The price was significantly less than what I would have paid with my insurance. After ordering, I received my kit in about 2 days. My test results were available 9 days after I shipped it back to the lab. The test results report was not at all like the sample report provided on the site, there were no graphs. My lab report was missing my collection date/times and the sample received date. The lab report also did not specify that this was salivary cortisol (rather than blood). The lab report layout discrepancy and missing data are the reasons why I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars. Despite that, the report was easy to read and interpret. Overall, I would recommend this to others.

I chose this saliva test cause it shows the cortisol levels throughout the day, which can’t be done with the normal blood test physicians use. This test is way more comprehensive and I would definitely recommend this to anyone.

Any Questions?

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding this test. Your question is missing? Please contact us at:

What exactly is the Daily Cortisol Test, and why is it important?

The Daily Cortisol Test is a helpful tool that measures cortisol levels at multiple points throughout the day, including morning values, after 4 hours, 8 hours, and 10 hours. It is essential because it helps identify abnormalities in stress hormone levels, which can impact your overall health, energy levels, and sleep patterns.

How can I benefit from the Daily Cortisol Test results?

The insights gained from the test can guide you in making informed decisions to reduce stress, improve sleep quality, and lead a healthier life. By addressing cortisol imbalances, you can enhance your overall well-being and energy levels.

Why is it useful to measure cortisol throughout the day?

A Daily Cortisol Test makes sense for a detailed clarification of the adrenal situation. On the other hand, this test is also suitable for people who e.g. suffer from sleep disorders. During the day the cortisol level drops so that the body can slowly come to rest in the evening. If this is not the case and the "inner clock" of our adrenal glands is off, which can lead to difficulty falling asleep.

What are "stress hormones"?

Stress hormones help the body to react to stress. They release energy to prepare the body for "flight" or "attack". In the case of heavy physical work, competitive sports, psychological, physically and mentally stressful situations or in case of serious illness, their production increases.

What are the symptoms of a cortisol deficiency?

Even a slight deficiency can lead to tiredness, depression, concentration difficulties or sleep disorders. If there is a severe deficiency or if, in addition to a previously untreated adrenal malfunction, a special stress situation (accident/illness/operation) occurs, a so-called Addisonian crisis can occur, which is fatal if left untreated.
