Who should take the test?

All of us are familiar with the feeling of being under constant stress and feeling tense. Unfortunately, our body cannot differentiate between whether we are actually in a life-threatening situation or in a daily situation. In both cases the body produces a lot of stress hormones, especially cortisol and adrenalin.

Cortisol helps us to overcome these situations as quickly as possible and protects us from stress overload. If we find ourselves constantly in stressful situations, our bodies become flooded with cortisol. For this reason, an excessive cortisol level can indicate that we are overstressed and can have detrimental effects on our health: People who have high cortisol levels over a longer period of time have a considerably higher risk of suffering from burnout.

The test analyzes the morning values of the following hormone:

  • Cortisol

Our Cortisol Saliva Test gives you information about the cortisol concentration in your body as the right amount of cortisol is beneficial for general health and well-being.

How does it work?

After ordering, you receive the test kit with everything you need. You take the samples conveniently in the comfort of your own home and send them back and your sample will be analyzed at a CLIA-certified lab. After the analysis, you can download your results conveniently through our secure Verisana portal.

What will my results tell me?

Your results will provide detailed information about whether your cortisol level is normal, low, or high compared to reference ranges in your age group. You can then discuss the results with your doctor or health practitioner, who can give you further guidance and treatment recommendations.

What guidance will I get along with my results?

We always recommend the discussion of the mailed results with your doctor or practitioner. Although we do not offer therapy service ourselves, we will gladly assist you in finding a suitable therapist in your area. Besides, further information is available on our website, especially in the different test categories, under “health conditions” and the FAQs. Still have questions? Test measures
For the Cortisol Saliva Test we analyse:
  • Cortisol
Cortisol

Cortisol is produced in the adrenal glands. Cortisol is the most important stress hormone besides adrenaline: Stress hormones help the body to react to particular strain. They release energy reserves in order to prepare the body for “escape” or “attack”. During hard, physical work, competitive sports, psychological, physical and mental stress situations, or during a severe illness, the distribution of cortisol is also stimulated.

Cortisol plays an important role in the different metabolic processes in the body. In immune processes, cortisol helps with its anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effect, and has an important function in maintaining the health of the body.

However: Both too low and too high levels can cause unpleasant symptoms.

It is well known that chronic stress is unhealthy – and stress is, in turn, the most important impulse that causes the increase of the distribution of cortisol. If the cortisol levels are too high, symptoms can include immunodeficiency, depression, physical exhaustion, metabolic disorders, diabetes, obesity and sleeping disorders. Excessively high cortisol levels can indeed cause unpleasant symptoms.

Just the same, excessively low cortisol levels can interfere with general well-being: Cortisol is vital. Apart from the provision of energy reserves, it also plays a role in the cardiovascular health, gastrointestinal health, the immune system and brain functions.

Any Questions?

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions regarding this test. Your question is missing? Please contact us at:

Why is cortisol so important for the body?

Cortisol plays an essential role in various metabolic processes in the body. Due to its increased release in stressful situations, it provides energy by breaking down the sugar, fat and proteins stored in our body. Cortisol also helps with immune processes due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects.

What does the cortisol level have to do with the "burnout syndrome"?

Burnout describes the state of long-term emotional exhaustion in response to chronic stress. Nowadays more and more people suffer from it. Everyday problems (e.g. at work) cause persistent stress, which initially leads to a phase of intensive cortisol release. If this phase lasts, however, the permanent stress leads to the adrenal cortex also being 'exhausted' and unable to produce enough cortisol. This leads to a lack of cortisol.

When is a diurnal cortisol test and when a single test of the morning value useful?

The cortisol deficiency test checks the morning value. This test is advisable if you suspect a general lack of cortisol or as a first test to see whether the adrenal glands are weakened. The diurnal cortisol test measures the cortisol level during the day. This makes sense for a more detailed clarification of the adrenal situation. Furthermore, this test is also suitable for people who e.g. suffer from sleep disorders. During the day the cortisol level drops so that the body can slowly come to rest in the evening. If this is not the case and the "internal clock" of our adrenal glands is off, this can lead to difficulty falling asleep.
